“Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it.”

-Edmund Burke

“The Overlook” will gaze in several directions, most often to American history to draw a connection between figures and events of the past to the present . . . and possibly the future. As Shakespeare wrote in The Tempest: “Whereof what’s past is prologue; what to come, in yours and my discharge.” Maybe we’ll all learn something and avoid making the same mistakes. Even better, perhaps we will be inspired by what people have done and are doing for the greater good.

I am not a trained historian but it has been my good fortune to research and write about American history every day, with the result being having books published that people actually buy. If you don’t believe that, please go to tomclavin.com. It is important to note that the purpose of “The Overlook” is not to lecture or even teach but to tell stories, and if you finish reading each installment informed or simply entertained, that’s good enough for me.

For now, new columns will appear every Monday and Friday and for a time will be free. Please let me know what you think. I look forward to this journey together, going from one “Overlook” to the other.
