Clavin writes vividly about the 1862 battle of Antietam, the bloodiest day in American history. But he also shares the more important news few people now know or realize about this famous clash. Although the battle was essentially a draw, it did force the Confederate troops to withdraw from "northern" soil, it dashed Southern hopes that Britain and/or France might come into the conflict on their side, and it allowed Lincoln to push his Emancipation Proclamation with vigor--thus making it clear that the Civil War was not just about reuniting the nation, but also about forever ending the stain of slavery.
