Judging by what happened to the banks in 2008, and what is happening now, I think we need a contemporary dose of the guiding hand and common sense of the woman portrayed in Tom Clavin's latest column. When you read it, you will learn how the daughter of a former slave became the first woman, and African American, to found a bank that succeeded (even during the Depression) where so many others failed.

I wonder what the oldest woman was teaching in that school if you get sacked upon getting married. How old was she?
Could be several older ones. Either there was not the opportunity to marry or they preferred to keep teaching.
