Clavin revives the colorful career of an early mountain man named John Colter, who served with distinction under Lewis and Clark, and later made his own mark scouting and trading with Indians in the early Western wilderness. Read here also about how the Blackfeet got their name and ferocious reputation, not to mention Colter's harrowing scrape with death. Captured and stripped naked by his native American foes--a companion was hacked to death and beheaded--he somehow out ran, hid in plain sight, and eluded them for days until reaching safety. That feat became legend in the early West, known to all adventurers as "Colter's Run."
