Clavin revives the colorful career of an early mountain man named John Colter, who served with distinction under Lewis and Clark, and later made his own mark scouting and trading with Indians in the early Western wilderness. Read here also about how the Blackfeet got their name and ferocious reputation, not to mention Colter's harrowing scrape with death. Captured and stripped naked by his native American foes--a companion was hacked to death and beheaded--he somehow out ran, hid in plain sight, and eluded them for days until reaching safety. That feat became legend in the early West, known to all adventurers as "Colter's Run."

And may have inspired the Cornel Wilde movie "The Naked Prey."

I don't remember that one, but if I ever see it listed on TCM I'll certainly watch. Hey, did you ever hear about "Brady's Leap." He was an early scout in the late-1700s who was cornered by a tribe he was trying to annihilate with his small band of rangers, and in the process got separated and chased until--he even did the old hide in a pond and breathe through a reed routine--he leaped over a high cliff near a raging river. Even the Indians wouldn't attempt it, so he managed to escape. This was all near Kent, Ohio, and the infamous Cayohoga River, so everyone at Kent State knew about it.
